"Die Reiche Au " - Reichenau, The Rich Island The itinerant bishop Pirmin knew already in the year 724, why he had taken up residence and found a monastery on this island in the "Untersee", even as it was really inhospitable at that time. During three centuries, the monastery had an extraordinary heyday. Until today, the magnificent churches are showing this "cradle of occidental culture". With the "Reiche Au", which means Rich Island, with its fertile grounds and the rich fishing grounds, the islanders have created a jewel.
Today, the largest island in Lake Constance, with its parts "Waldsiedlung" and "Lindenbühl" - both on the mainland - is state-approved health resort. It is famous for the historic buildings, fresh vegetables, salads and vines. Thanks to the mild climate, everything thrives wonderful. And thousands of birds from all over Europe are using the near "Wollmatinger Ried", one of the largest German nature reserves, as resting place on their way southwards.
